T-shirts brighten day for workers with disabilities

Young workers with disabilities were proudly showing off their new t-shirts while maintaining the grounds at Fairbridge Village this week. They were given Fairbridge t-shirts to reinforce to them that they are an invaluable part of the workforce.

These young people are a part of Fairbridge’s Enclave program, which aims to give them meaningful employment. They account for about 10 per cent of workers at Fairbridge and help with the upkeep of the grounds around the heritage tourist village. Enclave is one of the many programs that Fairbridge uses to help young people, teaching them invaluable life skills and helping them to feel significant.

“We love our new t-shirts,” Enclave employee Kristy Allingham said. “Now we really feel like we’re a part of the Fairbridge team.”

Colleague Nicholas Whittall said he liked working to make a difference for other young people.

Field coordinator Ann Rennie said the Enclave program gave the participants a chance to do paid work while learning new skills. "We hope that these skills will help these young people to hopefully get jobs in the workforce some time in the future," Ms Rennie said. “The young people are integral to the operation of Fairbridge Village.”
